Reading to Learn in the Digital Age: Challenges and Opportunities in the Middle Grades

In this eMonograph on Reading to Learn in the Digital Age, we have explored some of the ways that literacy is evolving rapidly in the 21st Century and considered a few possibilities for using the resources of the Internet to help our students develop the types of reading strategies they will need to participate in these new literacies. It is clear to us that learning well in digital environments requires all of the “old” strategies we needed in the 20th Century as well as a host of new ones. Fortunately, researchers and fellow teachers are learning and sharing with us. In many cases, our students may also be great guides for us and their classmates.
